April 2006 Newsletter
Spring is here - the birds are singing, the sun is shining, the weather is getting warmer...oh no it's time to check out that summer wardrobe and simultaneously find outfits that look light and airy yet still hide the remnants of my past four pregnancies. Never mind my youngest is turning four years old this month. This is a great time of year with children - no searching for hats, mittens, snow pants and boots every morning, yet not quite the season for slathering sunscreen on slippery, squirming arms and legs. Spring cleaning? Only if it means necessitating a trip to replace all those clothes that are so "last year". Okay, maybe five years...open the windows, crank up the stereo, and sit down to read some fun and hopefully funny stuff to get the spring back in your step.
What's New:

Packed with quotes from other notable hard working women, as well as my own SuperMom Awards, Commandments, Definitions, and "Perfect" SuperMom vacations, children, kitchens, etc, you'll find something to feel good about. The ideal SuperMom boss? Says "I just don't hear enough stories about your adorable toddler", counts flexibility, multi-tasking, nurturing, and in-depth knowledge of children's television shows as qualities worth rating on your annual review, and blocks your in-tray while you're on vacation. And remember, "No man was ever shot by his wife while doing the dishes." Check it out and order it today from www.amazon.ca, www.amazon.com, or www.chaptersindigo.ca.
I had a great time in March visiting Rogers Daytime Television in Kitchener, to talk about the challenges of Spring Break and how most parents view it as anything but! As a regular visitor to their show, I was thrilled when host Susan Cook-Sheerer asked me to sit in as co-host for part of the show - we had a great time and I'll be back there next month talking about my new book (check "Where's Kathy" on my website for up to date listings of appearances at any time).
On Thursday, March 30th, I hosted a tele-meeting for "Women in a Home Office" on the importance of networking when you work out of your home. For some great tips, visit my website for the link. And remember, typically every person you meet knows 250 people - you can annoy or impress a lot of potential clients or prospects in one visit to the grocery store!
My seminar times for the Toronto Star BabyTime and Parenting Show are now confirmed. Come down and join us at the show from May 5th to May 7th. I'll be talking about "The Myth of the SuperMom: Explored and Exploded", as well as "Get out of My Office! Strategies for Working From Home with Children", and "Planning the Perfect Birthday Party...and Handling Reality as well". I'll be in the Experts Area as well, where my books will be available. The trade show is fabulous, with everything parents can use in their real lives. Check it out at http://www.babytime.ca/semparenting.htm
Plus, join me on April 19th at Moms In The City, when I'll be talking about the transition from "SuperMom to SuperBored"...and back again. Adjusting to that first year at home with baby can be a tough one. Join this terrific group of women who are getting out there, visiting cultural and fun locations around Toronto and sharing their thoughts and experiences with each other. Visit their site at www.momsinthecity.com, and sign up for their fun and informational newsletter at www.babblingbananas.com
Read About:
Planning that "perfect" birthday party? I hate to be the one to break it to you, but there's really no such thing - however the good news is, that in a child's eye, any birthday party is a great birthday party. Read my article about how some local Toronto folks survived their own birthday party hiccups, in this month's Today's Parent Toronto. "Think you're alone in dreading your child's birthday party? Robert Munsch hates them too. "Things always get hyper at birthday parties." Coming from him that's saying a lot. He based his picture book "Moira's Birthday" on a party where unbeknownst to him or his wife, Julie, their daughter invited all of Grade Three to her celebration." Tired of doing laundry? Move to Spain! Read about my take on some exciting new technology, from an article which ran in the Mississauga News this month. "I would like to move to Spain. For the food, the culture, the climate? No, not really. It's the fact that this country has recently introduced a new washing machine that has got me quite excited. No, I'm not as pathetic as you think. It isn't anything to do with the advanced ability of getting clothes clean, or the size of the load, or the other tiny details that appliance manufacturers think that intelligent women like me worry about. This wonder of modern science includes the one feature I have been looking for since the day I first loaded my husband's pungent T-shirts into the washer, but the desire for this feature was unbeknownst even to me." Find out what this feature is by checking out the article at http://www.kathybuckworth.com/Move_to_Spain_-_Mississauga_news.htm
Things I didn't want to know - and you don't either, but now I'm sharing them with you. Babbling Bananas spilled the beans when they ran my article this month. "Those of us over the age of 16 know there are many terrible things about growing old. Back fat and unwanted chin hairs pop immediately to mind. Conversely, one of the great benefits of growing old is supposed to be that we become wise and more knowledgeable. Frankly, however, there are many things I didn't want to know that I have unfortunately learned in my forty-ish years. Stop reading if you are afraid to know them, too. " Be afraid, be very afraid..but read the rest at http://www.kathybuckworth.com/babbling_bananas_things_didn_t_want_to_know.htm
Supermomz is a fantastic website selling everything today's SuperMom might need - and they're running an excerpt from my first book "The Secret Life of SuperMom", on the top 10 signs that you are a real SuperMom. "Still unsure as to whether you fit the title of Supermom? To be clear, we're not talking about the mythical, organized, successful, "bring home the bacon and cook it up in the pan" woman, but the real Supermom. The one who is always late for school plays, always the first to leave the office under the prying eyes of co-workers, and always the last Mom home on her block. The life of the Supermom is a role that can only be accomplished with a healthy dose of reality, humor, and a good glass of red wine. No one could possibly be as busy, harassed, and time-crunched as a Supermom." Read about the signs at http://www.supermomz.com/store/information.php?info_id=6
ClubMom has officially launched it's "ClubMom Experts", a group of exciting women that I am thrilled to be linked with. They've loaded up lots of my articles; some old, some new, but all hopefully funny and touching to all Moms. And, if you like what you read, you can rate the articles on-line (be kind!) Check out:
Depressed? Join the club. "People with children more prone to depression." So screamed the radio news announcer as I drove my son to his one millionth hockey game in my stylish mini-van as I attempted to break up a fight between my two preschoolers in the row behind me, while frantically looking for directions to the one arena in my city I hadn't been to. Depressed? Sure there were times when I felt dismayed and disappointed (these normally occurred when there was a full length mirror in the room), but mostly I felt my children gave me some sort of vindication or validation for being in a bad mood and thus appearing to innocent bystanders (and sometimes victims) to be somewhat in a depressed state." The most difficult part of a sex change: Not as obvious as you might think. "Recently in Australia, a young girl won the right to change her sex from female to male, even before she had entered puberty. She will be taking birth control pills to suppress her menstrual cycle and keep her body from developing. This will begin her physical transformation as she prepares for life-altering surgery somewhere down the road. When this story was reported, there were outspoken opinions voiced on both sides of the argument, mostly as to whether this girl was old enough to have been making such momentous decision. At 13, it can easily be argued that she has not lived "as a woman", and will be entering the world of manhood without having experienced some of the great, and some of the frightening aspects of living as a woman...particularly as it comes to living life as a man." Curious? Read it at http://www.clubmom.com/display/240459?fromPage=219949
Men far less capable of withstanding discomfort. Duh. "Really. Shocking. So a recent headline screamed, or rather whined. Apparently women are 'trained' from a very young age to withstand pain in order to look good — waxing, tight bras, high heels and plucking — and okay not to mention that darn childbirth thing — allow us to endure pain that no man would ever contemplate. In fact, men feel another man's pain when they watch "101 Greatest Groin Hits" on America's Funniest Video. The guy on the couch in the living room next to you is thousand miles from the kid with the wooden bat and blindfold, yet he winces just like he was the recipient of the whack heard round the swollen testicle. (If you're a man and you're reading this you're probably grimacing. Ugh.)" For more pain... http://www.clubmom.com/display/240448?fromPage=219949
Plus many, many more - read all about it instead of getting to that sixteenth load of laundry.
Coming Up Next Month:
Today's Parent will be running my article on the difference between being "Thrilled" to have a girl, and being "Proud" to have a boy. Check it out in the May edition, Laugh Lines column.
Don't forget about the BabyTime Show, on from May 5th to May 7th, at the International Centre in Mississauga - go to the website for show details and seminar times. at www.babytime.ca
My undercover assignment may have just gotten a little bit more personal...and exciting - more details in May.
PLUS, I will be able to tell you all about the plans for my next book, "Journey to the Darkside: SuperMom Goes Home".
My Favourite Quote This Month:
"The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues." Elizabeth Taylor
Thanks for joining me in my eternal quest to lower the SuperMom bar. Until next month...
